Regranters Collective
CJRF is one of a growing number of organizations that work by pooling funding from a number of donors, then “regranting” that funding onward to our partners. This model of grantmaking can help channel resources to a larger number of groups than many donors could reach on their own, and it helps decentralize decision-making about the use of funding.
CJRF is continuing our partnership with five regranters that make strategy and grant decisions via participatory mechanisms. Providing grant funding to these organizations is a valuable funding method for CJRF for many reasons. These partners:
Are better positioned and more experienced in providing small but critical grants to grassroots organizations.
Generate valuable peer learning about participatory grantmaking.
Help to build solidarity and collaboration that can drive more funding to climate-just, community-led initiatives and movements.
The climate justice funding space is dynamic and experiencing tremendous change. In addition to providing grants to these partners, CJRF will cocreate a learning and collaboration program alongside interested partners. Together we will generate a stronger understanding of the different regranters in this space, including individual niches and strategies, and the various roles that each organization plays in the broader regranter ecosystem.
We hope that by better understanding each other, climate justice regranters can work together to grow a healthy ecosystem, including through messaging to new regranters, new foundations, and the rapidly growing number of players interested in climate justice philanthropy.
