Participatory Grantmaking to Drive Climate Justice
Young people around the world face the impacts of climate change, yet they are often excluded from decision-making spaces. Participatory grantmaking can change this. Our two-year, $300,000 grant in 2019 to the Global Greengrants Fund supported the grantmaking of the Fund’s Next Generation Climate Board, which funds activities such as organizing national youth workshops to increase youth awareness of climate change; training students on disability rights inclusive activism for climate change; supporting youth in documenting observations of climate change; and more.
As part of our participatory grantmaking strategy for 2024-25, CJRF awarded Global Greengrants Fund $175,000 to continue their climate justice regranting work. Unlike the previous grant, this grant will support all of the Fund’s participatory grantmaking for climate and is not restricted to the work of the Next Gen Board.

Why Global Greengrants Fund?
Global Greengrants Fund operates under a participatory grantmaking model where grant decisions are made by a network of activists and expert advisors located in the countries served by the Fund. Each advisory board sets their own strategy for grantmaking and manages their board’s grantmaking budget. This participatory grantmaking ensures that funding responds to the needs of communities as they address and adapt to climate change around the world.
