Spotlighting the Importance of Grassroots Climate Justice Solutions
Grassroots movements are critical for building real political power amongst people hardest hit by climate change and systemic injustice. In 2019, our two-year, $300,000 grant to the CLIMA Fund (Climate Leaders In Movement Action) supported the Fund’s efforts to promote the work of grassroots climate justice activists building powerful movements. CLIMA has also successfully used their platform as a convener to share learnings with the philanthropic community and ultimately grow funder interest in CLIMA partners’ climate solutions.
In 2024, as part of our participatory grantmaking pilot strategy, CJRF awarded CLIMA $250,000 to continue supporting grassroots movements addressing the root causes of the climate crisis, and to influence how philanthropy views bold and effective grassroots action. CLIMA will use their communications work to help funders understand climate justice and value grassroots climate solutions.

Why the CLIMA Fund?
The CLIMA Fund is a collaboration between four regranters—Global Greengrants Fund, Grassroots International, Thousand Currents, and Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights—united by a common vision to resource grassroots climate justice solutions. By accompanying Global South communities building strong grassroots climate justice movements globally, CLIMA uplifts voices for just, locally designed solutions to the climate crisis.
