East Africa Grants
In East Africa, climate change has brought prolonged dry periods, intense rain, and increasingly unpredictable seasons to large populations who make a living through farming, herding, and fishing.
CJRF makes grants in Kenya and Tanzania to raise community voices for sustainable livelihoods, climate resilient land management, and community-driven development. Because of CJRF support, people in East Africa are better able to manage the effects of the climate crisis. Examples of our impact include:
Paralegals are helping Kenyans in remote regions secure and strengthen their land rights, giving them more control of their resources to improve climate resilience.
More than 25 pastoralist communities in drought-affected northern Kenya are working together to secure legal access to their traditional lands; create community plans for climate-resilient resource management; and advocate for their plans with local and national governments.
Women and youth in Tanzania have participated in training and peer mentor groups that enable them to effectively advocate for increased grassroots control over global financial resources dedicated to climate change.

Renewed and expanded grants demonstrate our efforts to build deeper relationships with partners and invest in promising efforts to build voice and power for those hit hardest by climate impacts.
