Increasing Impact Through Collaboration
When groups working in isolation on similar issues come together, it offers unique opportunities to accelerate change. Our earlier grants to MakeWay, totaling $600,000, supported the creation the Northern Indigenous Stewardship Circle, which coordinates Inuit- and Dene-led efforts across the Canadian North to monitor and care for the land. By housing and convening local partners to share knowledge, best practices, and to collaborate on advocacy efforts, MakeWay continues to increase the overall reach and effectiveness of these groups.
In 2023, we extended our support by providing a $200,000 USD grant to MakeWay for the Northern Indigenous Stewardship Circle. This funding will help advance their efforts to build leadership, collaboration, and community wellness through their Leadership Fellowship program and continue investing in northern stewardship programming. The 2023-2025 funding also supports MakeWay's co-development of an Indigenous evaluation approach to highlight the value of Indigenous stewardship programming.

2024: $200,000
Why MakeWay?
For almost ten years, MakeWay has supported Indigenous stewardship programming, culminating in the creation of the Northern Indigenous Stewardship Circle in 2021. Circle members have created an ecosystem of Arctic Indigenous organizations sharing resources and knowledge to respond to a rapidly warming climate in ways that prioritize traditional ways of knowing and being.
