Governance for Climate Resilience: Expanding Climate Justice

Helping communities adapt to climate change requires extended and multi-faceted support. Our 3-year, $200,000 grant in 2023 supports the Center for Natural Resource Studies (CNRS) to build on CJRF’s previous grants to CNRS and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development supporting the Governance for Climate Resilience (G4CR) coalition.

Under these grants, CNRS implemented land and water restoration activities in the Munshigonj watershed, increased local water and climate stewardship though local advocacy, and used research and lessons from past projects to influence policy with scientific and cultural solutions that lead to coastal resilience.

As part of this renewed grant, CNRS is expanding their work to additional communities and supporting them to reclaim more freshwater canals. The work aims to address what CNRS calls an “adaptation-governance-justice nexus.” This nexus approach ensures that adaptation, governance, and justice activities are embedded in technical adaptation activities to better achieve sustainable, long-term benefits.

2019-2022: $204,160
2021: $200,000

Why CNRS?

CJRF’s partnership with CNRS has had impressive and tangible impact. Through previous grants, CNRS has developed a promising model for securing climate adaptation in coastal Bangladesh. The G4CR consortium artfully combines technical interventions on water and agriculture with activities to strengthen the capacity of communities to raise their voices and demand their rights from local government. This grant offers the opportunity to expand this success to more communities in Bangladesh.
