Documenting Displacement to Drive Policy Change
Aaina is a 25-year-old organization based in Odisha, India, focused on addressing climate change, gender inclusion, and social justice for marginalized communities. The organization works primarily with women, youth, people with disabilities, and caste-minority groups, ensuring diverse representation in its leadership. Aaina engages with coastal communities in Odisha, particularly in Puri, Kendrapada, and Ganjam, who are grappling with the impacts of rising sea levels, forced displacement, loss of livelihoods, and cultural disintegration. These communities face significant challenges, including health issues, food insecurity, and inadequate government rehabilitation support.

Grant:
2025: US$ 74,900
CJRF Region:
Bay of Bengal
Why Aaina?
Aaina plans to use the grant to implement a community-led participatory research project in the most climate-impacted districts. The research will focus on documenting non-economic losses related to displacement, such as the disruption of social, cultural, and livelihood structures. This data will help advocate for a more inclusive and just rehabilitation policy. Additionally, Aaina will work on empowering youth with alternative livelihood training, provide counseling and mental health support, and establish a Migrants Information Hub to assist displaced populations in rebuilding their lives with dignity.
