Campaigning for a Human Rights-Based Approach to Renewable Energy Development
Indigenous Peoples in Chile, Kenya, Nepal, and the Philippines are adversely affected by renewable energy development, which often violates their rights to land, territory and resources, cultural heritage, and the right to participate in decision-making. While Indigenous Peoples fully support the needed just transition from fossil fuels, renewable energy development must be guided by the respect and protection of human rights, and the creation of equitable and just solutions to climate change.
CJRF’s grant to Right Energy Partnership with Indigenous Peoples supports them to bring together Indigenous communities in Chile, Kenya, Nepal, and the Philippines to promote their rights and wellbeing in the implementation of renewable energy projects in their territories. Through capacity building, mobilization campaigns, and advocacy efforts from the local to the global, Right Energy Partnership is empowering Indigenous Peoples as rights-holders who can engage with states, renewable energy companies, and investors, to campaign for them to protect and respect human rights in their business operations.
